Starting
off the 2003 season, Furlong could barely wait to start
racing again after a severe winter. This race showcased
many innovations by the racers as the IGSA was implementing
its unlimited street luge class for the first time in
the history of the sport.
Team
Hardcore Pavement Racing rider Abdil "Furlong"
Mahdzan had showed up to the race with what appears to
be a modified pegless Dregs luge, or rather nicknamed
"Dregless". The luge has a front fairing made
out of polycarbonate. For this race season, Furlong has
obtained some new equipment, namely 92mm ABEC11 Flywheels
and Randal Luge Trucks, courtesy of his sponsor IRS Sports.
During
practice on Friday, Furlong had suffered a sprained right
ankle after crashing feet first into the hay bales at
Turn 6. The impact caused him to get thrown off the luge
and flip, and the luge itself flipped a few feet behind
him. The cause of the crash was attributed to riding the
Randal Luge Trucks for the first time which were overtightened
thus causing the rider not being able to cut into the
apex of the turn as sharply and drifting wide. Fortunately,
the sprained ankle wasn't severe, although the pain became
worse at night.
Saturday
saw the riders qualifying. Furlong delivered his personal
best of 1 minute 46.795 seconds on the street luge, putting
him about 8 seconds behind the best qualifying time and
in 19th place on the bracket seeding. In classic luge,
he had clocked 1 minute 53.481 seconds.
The
race on Sunday saw Furlong in the 5th heat of the round
of 32, pitting him against Pete Eliot, Chris McBride,
and Michael Shelton. Eliot takes the holeshot, followed
by McBride, Furlong, and Shelton. Furlong drafts McBride
all the way from the start till Turn 5, where McBride
starts braking early, allowing Furlong to make an early
pass on the inside and reaching the finish line in second.
Incidents in this heat included Shelton splitting his
thumb open after hitting the wire on a hay bale earlier
up on the course, and McBride crashing into the hay at
Turn 6 and breaking his ankle. Wishes of recovery go to
these brave racers. Furlong advances to the quarterfinals.
The
quarterfinals witnessed Furlong in the 3rd heat of the
round of 16, up against the likes of Pete Eliot, Jeremy
Kahn, and Richard Hodkinson. Again, Eliot takes the holeshot,
followed by Kahn, Furlong, and Hodkinson. Kahn, who was
riding his new Rogers Pegless, lifts his legs up over
the rear end of Eliot in an attempt to draft him. Furlong
stays right behind Kahn and lines up for the draft on
the rolling straightaway. However, Hodkinson manages to
outroll Furlong and takes a commanding position on the
Eliot-Kahn duo. All 3 riders approach Turn 5 hot with
minimal room to spare, as Furlong tries to catch up. He
finishes 4th in this heat and fails to advance to the
semifinals.

The
finals saw Rian James, Bill Smrtic, Mike McIntyre, and
Jeremy Kahn. James takes the holeshot, which turns out
to be a DQ for paddling too soon before the start is signaled.
McIntyre crashes at the chicane at the top. Smrtic and
Kahn battle it out all the way down the course, until
Kahn manages to squeeze a tight pass on the inside of
Turn 6. Kahn comes in first place at the Talimena Drive
Xtreme Downhill!

Furlong
would like to thank "Red Bull girl" Emma from
Vietnam for giving him all the Red Bull he could drink
all weekend!
